Math Salad

 

Cooking with your child teaches how numbers are used in everyday life. By preparing meals and snacks together, your child can practice essential math skills such as counting, sorting, grouping, and patterning, as well as measuring and estimating. Kids and parents will have fun preparing this wholesome recipe that provides a meaningful opportunity to practice math skills.

Materials

  • ~ 1 cucumber
  • ~ 2 tomatoes
  • ~ 3 carrots
  • ~ 4 pieces of cauliflower
  • ~ 5 tsp. of sunflower seeds
  • ~ 6 pea pods
  • ~ 7 mushrooms
  • ~ 8 cubes of cheese
  • ~ 9 Romaine lettuce leaves
  • ~ 10 croutons
  • ~ Salad dressing of your choice
    (serves 4)


Instructions

  • ~ Ask your child to assist you in gathering all of the needed ingredients, in the proper amounts.
  • ~ Line the ingredients up on your kitchen counter to create a number line. Then count each ingredient out loud.
  • ~ Wash, peel, slice, or chop each of the ingredients in order.
  • ~ Next, put one salad together on a plate, layering on the ingredients one at a time. Then complete the remaining three salads, following the same layering pattern.
  • ~ Finally, praise your child-and enjoy your meal!
