History for Kids: United Nations Day

United Nations Day is an opportunity to educate children about the importance of peace. It is celebrated by all eighty-one countries which are members of the United Nations. The United Nations officially came into existence on October 24, 1945 after World War II ended.

Peace starts with each of us treating others with respect and caring. By teaching children how to be good neighbors we can make our communities and our world a better place.

  • ~ Ask the children, "What can you do to show kindness and friendship at daycare, school and home?"

  • ~ Join hands in a circle and sing the song, "The more we get together."

  • ~ Trace the handprints of all the people at your daycare and put them together to create a "Peace Flower." Glue the handprints onto a stem and place it on the wall of your daycare home.
