Tissue Paper Leis

On May 1st Hawaiian children celebrate "Lei Day." A lei is a colorful garland of flowers that represents the Hawaiian spirit of friendship and love.

Supplies:

  • ~ Colorful tissue paper cut into large squares (3-4 inches)
  • ~ Yarn (a two foot long piece for each child)
  • ~ Clear tape
  • ~ Scissors

Directions:

  • ~ Wrap a piece of tape tightly around one end of each piece of yarn. This makes it easier to "thread" the tissue paper onto the yarn.
  • ~ Make a stack of three to four squares of tissue paper. Fold the stacked squares in half and use the scissor to cut a small slit in the center.
  • ~ Thread the tissue onto the yarn through the opening you cut.
  • ~ Scrunch the tissue paper together to create the look of a flower.
  • ~ Repeat with different colors of tissue paper.
