Stone Soup

 

Ingredients

  • ~ Carrots
  • ~ Onions
  • ~ Potatoes
  • ~ Tomatoes
  • ~ Celery
  • ~ Peas
  • ~ Green Beans
  • ~ Cabbage


Read the book Stone Soup with the children. If possible, take a field trip to the grocery store and let each child select a vegetable to add to the soup. Cut each vegetable into small pieces, all about the same size. This way they will all cook in about the same amount of time. Bring 2 quarts water to a boil and add the vegetables carefully. Cook until the vegetables are tender. Season soup to taste. Discuss with the children how the cooking affects the texture, flavor and aroma of each vegetable.

Serving size: 1/2 cup of soup is one serving of fruit/vegetable (1/4 cup) at lunch or supper.
