Rubber Egg

Materials

  • ~ Wide-Mouthed Glass Jar with Cover
  • ~ White Vinegar
  • ~ Raw Egg

Instructions

  • ~ Put the raw egg in the bottom of a wide-mouth glass jar. Fill with white vinegar. Cap and set aside for two weeks.
  • ~ Tiny bubbles will form on the shell, a sign that acid is acting on the alkaline shell and slowly dissolving it.
  • ~ Open the jar regularly and gently test how the egg feels.
  • ~ The egg will "grow" (expand) in size.
  • ~ The vinegar will dissolve the shell and cook the membrane so that the egg feels like a water-filled balloon.
  • ~ Remove the egg from the jar. Wash carefully. Hold the egg to the light to see the floating yoke. Gently roll and bounce the egg.
