Learning About The Sun

Materials

  • ~ Thermometer
  • ~ Black Construction Paper
  • ~ Magnifying Glass

1. Discuss the difference the sun makes in our skin color over the course of the summer. Why? Talk about being sunburned. Go outside on a warm sunny day. Stand in the sun and fell the heat. Why does your skin become warm? Stand in the shade. Is there a difference? Why?
2. Use two pieces of black construction paper. Leave one inside; keep one outside in the sun when it is not raining. Is there a difference in the color? Why?
3. Show the children how you can burn paper using a magnifying glass. Strongly caution the children that it can also burn their skin. Do not let the children use the magnifying glass outdoors without constant adult supervision.
