History for Kids: Sail Away Columbus Day

The reason we celebrate Columbus Day is to commemorate the anniversary of the discovery of America. This holiday is typically celebrated on the 12th of October.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian sailor who was seeking a safe route for trade ships to get to India and China from Europe. In 1492 he set sail from Spain with three ships, The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria. The ships accidentally landed in South America.

To teach your kids more about the life of this explorer, read the book, "Meet Christopher Columbus," by James T. DeKay.

Christopher Columbus Song
Sung to the tune of I'm a Little Teapot.

Christopher Columbus sailed the sea,
Ships on the ocean, one, two, three.
When his trip was finished, he could see,
America, the home of you and me!
